Semester 1

BACTERIOLOGY, IMMUNOLOGY AND VIROLOGY

This unit deals at an advanced level with the structure, physiology, genetics, classification and ecology of bacteria and viruses, and the principles of immunology. Practical work comprises experiments on bacterial cell structure, prokaryotic cell biology and genetics; immunology; virology; and cell culture. At the end of the unit, students can expect to have an excellent theoretical and practical grounding in the major branches of microbiology. In addition, students learn how to evaluate experimental data and to prepare a correctly structured scientific report and develop computing skills, including use of the World Wide Web to access information, and the use of graphics software to prepare and analyse data. As practical classes are conducted in small groups, students learn to achieve outcomes through teamwork.

Lectures: 4 per week; tutorials: as arranged to fit in with the practical work; labs: 9 hrs per week minimum

Prerequisites: Introductory Microbiology 200, Molecular Biology 225 and Biochemistry 210.

One or more units selected from Microbiology 212, Medical Microbiology 213, Microbial Epidemiology 215, Comparative Immunology 216 and Applied Microbiology 218 are advisable.
